David von der Thannen specializes in international arbitration, litigation, and antitrust, with a particular emphasis on complex commercial disputes.

Before joining PARAGON, David von der Thannen served as a research fellow and Ph.D. scholar at the University of Vienna’s Department of Civil Procedure, where he lectured on arbitration, civil procedural law, and legal advocacy. He also acted as Head Coach of the University of Vienna’s Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot team, leading it to historic success: under his guidance, the team secured a win in 2023 and second place in 2024. He later completed his judicial clerkship at the Higher Regional Court of Vienna and passed the New York Bar Exam in July 2025.

David von der Thannen obtained his first law degree from the University of Vienna (Mag. iur. 2020), graduating second in a class of 616. During his studies, he spent a semester studying in the Netherlands, worked as a pro bono start-up consultant, and founded the alumni network for the Faculty of Law’s High Potential Programme.

In 2025, David von der Thannen earned an LL.M. degree from Harvard Law School. While at Harvard, he served as Vice President of the Harvard International Arbitration Law Students Association and held board positions with the Journal of Law & Technology (JOLT), the Harvard Negotiation Law Review, and the Harvard Antitrust Association. In recognition of his scholarly work, he was awarded the Addison Brown Prize for the year’s best contribution to private international law.

David von der Thannen is a frequent speaker at academic conferences and has published extensively on arbitration, antitrust, merger control, and EU law in leading national and international journals.

He advises clients in both English and German.
